During liming all substances that are not to be turned into leather are eliminated. In fact, owing to its particular chemical composition and to the structure of the fibers, only the derm, the central layer of the skin, can be turned into leather during tanning. In liming the skin is treated with sodium sulphide and calcium hydroxide in order to de-hair the skin, eliminate the epidermis and partially saponify the natural fats in the hide.
